30*8=240,so add a few and I think we are talking about roughly 300 attributes, not thousands, but I guess things could grow. Two suggestions. Firstly get in contact with support and ask for access to an early beta of a window calculation editor. It will help you a lot! Secondly why not try both methods and see how they fit with your model? There are often several ways to do things in LDSD and the devil will be in the detail. I suspect if you have many windows, you will also have concerns about keeping those all looking consistent and their on-going maintenance, together with any associated processes, so try a few out. You'll then also be in a position to judge the true impact on the database of these un-used attributes. Yes it would be great if LDSD allowed you to overtype or caste, but it doesn't.
