Sorry, I am no expert on this and it's been ages since I have done it myself. I believe that you do want to bind your wildcard cert to SSL and no it should not hurt. I have had issues with Firefox because it doesn't like wildcard certs a whole lot. Otherwise the Wildcard certs are cheap and easy and do work. Again my knowledge here is a bit sketchy but with a private cert you must put a cert at both ends for it to work. With a public cert you put the cert on the server and the client is able to access the other half meaning you don't have to worry about the clients. I hope I got most of this right.
